Any new cardiologic method or equipement for clinical use needs to be thoroughly tested before introducing it into service. The experimental lab for heart electrophysiology, a joint venture of Nemocnice Na Homolce and 1.LF UK opened in 2007, is a place where these can be tested on large animals (swine, sheep). It is well equipped for testing methods for arhytmology and intensive cardiac care as well as for physiological research. In the past it has homed studies testing the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for CPR, outcomes of cardiogenic shocs and other aspects of CPR that might affect survivability, such as induced hypothermia or effects of body orientation during transport. In arhytmology, the lab is used for testing maneuverability of catheters, novel ablation methods and ablation generators and also as a training centre for implanting and extracting leadless pacemakers and robotic ablations.
In the past 10 years over 605 interventions were conducted in the lab, from which 153 were aimed at new commercial device evaluation, 143 were trainings and 309 were research studies.
