Word of Introduction

Dear colleagues and friends,

This year the Czech Society of Cardiology (CSC) is organizing the 22nd Annual Congress.  The CSC is a successor of the Society of Cardiology of Czechoslovakia established in 1929 by Professor Libenský and other renowned cardiologists of the period between the wars; it is the third oldest society of cardiology in the world. We honour the CSC founder every year by awarding the Gold CSC Medal (Libensky's Medal) to one of the outstanding figures from our midst for their life-long contributions to the development of diagnostics, treatment and research into cardiovascular disorders. Since 2012, the Gold CSC Medal (Libensky's Medal) has also been awarded to one significant foreign cardiologist – this year the awarded person is prof. Fausto Pinto – a renowned Portuguese cardiologist and the President of the European Society of Cardiology for the period of 2014–2016. Prof. Pinto is going to have the opening speech at the Congress.

Nevertheless, most of us come to the congress not for the famous history but for news from our discipline. Let us remind you and motivate you to prepare the abstracts for the Congress in the weeks to come. The CSC Congress is always a presentation of the best from the Czech cardiology. The interesting program has been prepared by all CSC working groups. We believe you will enjoy it.

At the traditional general meeting of CSC members the new committee is going to evaluate the results of third year of its activities – and there is plenty to consider: a significantly updated National Cardiovascular Program, the second year of a new form of the Cor et Vasa Journal, support for young cardiologists, including the Kardio-35 Working Group, publishing résumés of recommended procedures of the European Society of Cardiology (these are created by our top experts and the objective is to make the European Society of Cardiology guidelines more readable, understandable and available for the broad practice). Within the Congress framework, the CSC also supports several events outside the exhibition grounds aimed at education and promotion of healthy lifestyle. These all are indicators that the CSC has transformed into a society of cardiology of really European character.

We have prepared a worthy social and cultural program. We believe you will enjoy this year's congress and we wish you beautiful four days in Brno and success in applying the obtained knowledge in your professional lives. We are looking forward to meeting you at the professional events but also at the CSC Gala Evening organized in honour of the 22nd Annual Congress.
